The world premiere of the Indian feature film “An Ideal Wife” by independent documentary filmmaker, producer and curator of art exhibitions Anuradha Bansal took place in Perm. It also touches on complex topics related to the position of women in society, the clash of traditions and modernity.
She is very brave, sincere, not afraid to open up to strangers, and this captivates.

The film captures, with such remarkable sensitivity, the emotional reality of a modern woman—someone who may appear independent on the surface yet remains constrained by deeply ingrained societal norms and expectations. The story unfolds so subtly and thoughtfully, frame by frame, with each moment flowing naturally into the next. Beyond the compelling and meaningful narrative, I was especially struck by the cinematography. Every scene is beautifully composed, with the visual richness and attention to detail one associates with award-winning cinema. The contrast between life in Calcutta and Delhi is captured so vividly that, even as a viewer sitting miles away, I could almost feel the atmosphere, sense the rhythms of daily life, and imagine the fragrances of each setting. Your work has that rare ability to make a place feel alive.

What makes the film outstanding is its simplicity and honesty. There is no enactment, no manufactured tension; the arguments, silences, and small moments of understanding between mother and daughter feel genuine. This authenticity is what makes the story specific to Bansal’s household having ramifications beyond. The questions of love, duty, and self-determination are common to women across cultures.

The Good Wife is not that usual, conventional kind of movie, it is something different that you get to watch on screen, so relatable, so profound and thought-provoking. It is a layered movie, every layer brings out a perspective of life, we often fail to recognize due to lack of time, or a lack of understanding. I really have to thank the maker, the director of the movie, Anuradha Bansal, for coming out with this marvel. Slow-paced, lyrical and heart touching indeed!

Bringing a deeply personal story to the screen—showing your life and family in all its rawness. It’s a rare kind of storytelling that doesn’t just show a story—it makes you feel it.

A fantastic watch of the acclaimed documentary ‘The Good Wife’ directed by Anuradha Bansal as part of the 6th Beyond Borders Feminist Film Festival held at the Alliance Francaise de Delhi. The documentary, showcases the interpretation of marriage and an ‘ideal wife’ by two women, who are differentiated by age yet United by Blood. The victory of the film (it was under production for nearly a decade!) lies in the fact that it shows an unbiased take on patriarchy and societal norms which have affected a lot of Indian women (and men too). The director is part of the happenings and she successfully showcases the internal struggles that place in most Indian households, that affects progress on a lot of counts. Don’t miss this one, when it comes to being screened in your city.
